SONG LOUNGE – Monday 23rd April

April’s Song Lounge @ The Ellington Jazz Club in Perth, WA, has more than a touch of folk, country and storytelling. Featuring four outstanding artists whose songs are stories and journeys told through voice and guitar…

Andy Newman

Andy is a young guy who breathes disturbed folk. Not quite soft enough to be considered folk and not groovy enough to be blues, he blends these folk and blues styles through a varying array of finger picking styles. During his formative years, Andy fell in love with the guitar and his thirst for new styles and techniques has not been quenched almost 10 years on. Drawing on influences from Jeff Lang, richard Thompson, Rory Gallagher and just about every blues/rock band in existence, Andy channels the energy and passion of a now forgotten era. Andy will write a song about just about everything, from girls he loves to his obsession with the old west and his love for a good game of texas hold ’em. And while he tries to make you feel something, he’ll try and bring it back a bit and make you laugh.

Holly and Tom

Yet another Australian brother-sister collaboration was born when Tom finally jumped on the bandwagon after years of persuasion and this lovely duo was formed. In 2011 classically trained percussionist Holly took up the piano and started making up for several years of lost time. Concurrently, bedroom guitar idol Tom decided the time was ripe to step into the glow of a critical audience, and the pair started writing songs, each with their own distinctive style. Holly and Tom’s songs are drawn from the untrustworthy depths of their imaginations and reflect thoughts about growing up, making friends, impatience, donkeys and hopeless soldiers. Enjoy the disturbingly honest perspective of the best-behaved pair in Australian folk music.
