SONG LOUNGE – MON 21ST NOVEMBER

Song Lounge at The Ellington has been a fantastic success this year, with many performances from a wide range of talented singer/songwriters. November’s Song Lounge sees Rachel Gorman, Sam Carmody, Georgia Mooney and Ryan Webb play our last show of 2011 – not to be missed!

Rachel Gorman (of Rachel & Henry Climb a Hill)

Fremantle quirk-folk songstress Rachel Gorman has forged a steady following, charming audiences with her honest storytelling, thoughtful lyrics and playful melodies. Drawing on her coastal roots, Irish heritage and rural upbringing, her music tells of lost loves, pirates, pigeons and kite-flying, with the occasional haiku thrown in for good measure. As front woman for the band Rachel & Henry Climb a Hill, she has received acclaim for her songwriting, winning WAM Folk Song of the Year in 2010 for her song “The Silver Yacht”. The band has released a highly successful debut EP and recently their debut album, songs from which have received national airplay and been featured on various compilations. Recently, Rachel was invited to join Clare Bowditch onstage to sing a duet on her Winter Secrets tour, and has also supported the Basement Birds, the Panda Band, Cut Off Your Hands and Operator Please. As a performer, Rachel is open and honest, with her cheeky sense of humour often shining through on stage.

Sam Carmody

A doctoral writing student, and published writer, Western Australian songwriter combines serious poetic reflections and popular songwriting in his songs. He has been compared to Neil Finn and Paul Kelly for his markedly antipodean consciousness: like Kelly’s, Carmody’s songs gravitate to the gritty and urban and ordinary whilst retaining a feel of the sublime in ordinariness. In their short time together, Sam Carmody and band, The Warning Birds, have supported nationally touring acts in Split Seconds, The Panda Band, Tim and Jean, and Dave Graney. They have toured their home state extensively, sold out shows in local Perth venues and steadily built a following based on explosive, energetic live performances. An exciting new voice in Australian songwriting.

Georgia Mooney

Sydney girl, Georgia Mooney is a singer-songwriter with unique style and musicality. Her songs are a delicate and genuine melding of folk, jazz and pop. Living in Perth for the last 4 years studying music, she has become a promising talent, capturing the attention of audiences and prominent musicians across the country. With influences including Rufus Wainwright and Joni Mitchell, Georgia’s set ensures an experience of enchanting new music.

Ryan Webb

Ryan Webb is the front man for Perth-based folk-rock outfit Ryan Webb & The Method. Led by Ryan’s International Award Winning songwriting, they have built a solid reputation, and hard-earnt following, over several years as a performing and recording outfit, and have become one of the brightest hopes of Perth’s buoyant folk-rock and alt-country circuit. As a songwriter Ryan has received much acclaim, notching up awards and nominations on a internation, national and local level.
